A practical starting point
Body doubling: a little company for your next step.
The task is there. You want to do it. Getting into it is another matter. Body doubling gives you a way to try working with company, whether that means sitting with a friend, joining a video session, or opening an AI companion.
What is body doubling?
Body doubling means doing your own task while another person is present. You might both work at the same table or connect remotely. The other person does not need to do your task for you. CHADD describes it as a tool some adults use when starting and completing projects. Read CHADD’s introduction to body doubling.
For a first attempt, keep the arrangement simple: name one task, decide whether you want quiet or occasional conversation, and agree when to finish. You can try that with a friend before choosing an app or a regular routine.
Choose the kind of company you want
Someone in the room
A friend can read while you sort paperwork, or you can each tackle your own work. Agree on how much chatting suits both of you. This option needs a shared place and a time when you are both available.
A person over video
Connect with someone remotely and say what you plan to do. Before starting, agree on camera use, conversation and an end time. A scheduled session can give your task a clear place in the day, but you still need to coordinate with another person.
An AI body doubling companion
An AI companion offers a different kind of presence. Doppel lets you choose an AI character, use video or voice companionship, and break tasks into smaller steps. It is an AI interaction; decide whether that kind of company suits you. Camera-off voice sessions are an option.
An example: start the report you have been avoiding
Here is a suggested way to use Doppel’s companionship and task breakdown. This is an example you can adapt, not a transcript or a promised result.
- Name the obstacle. Tell your companion, “I need to write a report, but I keep avoiding the document.” Add what feels unclear: the topic, the first sentence, or the amount of work.
- Choose one visible action. Use task breakdown to work toward a smaller starting point. For this example, choose “open the document and write three rough headings.” Adjust any suggested steps that do not fit your situation.
- Work with company. Open a video or voice session and do that action. Keep your camera off if you prefer. You can choose a short attempt, such as five minutes, rather than committing to finishing the whole report.
- Check what happened. Tell your companion what you actually did. Three unfinished headings can still be your stopping point. Decide whether to continue, make the next step smaller, or take a break.
Make the first step fit your day
Choose an action you can recognize as finished. These examples do not require completing the larger task in one sitting.
- Work: reply to an overdue email
- Open the message and write the one question your reply needs to answer. Draft the greeting later if that is where you get stuck.
- Home: face a messy kitchen
- Choose five dishes to put away. Leave the rest of the room outside this attempt; you can decide on another step afterward.
- Study: begin a reading assignment
- Open the assigned page, read one paragraph, and jot down a question. Use that question to decide what to read next.
What to expect, and when to change the setup
Treat your first session as an experiment. Notice whether you began the task and whether the company felt useful. If conversation becomes a distraction, try a quieter arrangement. If the task remains too big, reduce the first action. You can also choose a human partner or work alone.
Doppel is a productivity companion, not a clinician. It does not diagnose or treat ADHD, and this guide does not claim that AI companionship has the same effects as working with another person. AI suggestions can miss important context; keep the choices about your work and daily life in your hands.
